In East Asian art, ‘empty space’ is not merely a void. ‘Empty space’ absorbs and neutralizes the intense energy of subjects like mountain landscapes and stones, releasing it in a balanced manner. This process extends the viewer's gaze infinitely, while implying the importance of harmony within the universe.
In the modern world, the energy of objects grows stronger, making the energy of space increasingly difficult to perceive. Therefore, I have intentionally intensified the energy of space to create an environment where these two energies interact. Energy can be transposed through movement. Hence, both objects and space in my work possess dynamism. Objects emit energy through movement, which transforms into the energy of space in the form of sound and wind.
When the audience enters this dynamic space, the first thing they encounter is a spinning object. This object moves organically, emitting wind and distorted sound of wind. Utilizing the sound of mosquitoes, which disperses the audience's attention throughout the space, it is experienced by the audience in various forms. The object emits its energy through the space, making the audience aware of the space, and the two seek to achieve harmony.
These movements attempt another form of harmony through pauses. They suddenly stop their dynamic actions, becoming one through the medium of stillness. This contrast emulates the absorption and release of ‘empty space’.
