Since ancient times, humans have raised other creatures such as livestock, pets, and plants. There are many purposes to raising life, but I focused on cultivating them with aesthetic purposes. When raising life for an ornamental purpose, visual appearance is often prioritized, and the responsibility that follows in raising life in this situation is commonly overlooked. These circumstances may make people numb to the responsibility against life and eventually cause it to die or be abandoned.
This work began with my experience of this situation. I wanted to make the cage of my gecko attractive, so I made ‘Vivarium’. Vivarium is a small ecosystem artificially created by growing animals and plants in the tank, which turned out to be very beautiful because it seemed to recreate nature in a small way. But I forgot that it takes a lot of effort to maintain the vivarium. Eventually, the vivarium I made was discarded due to negligent management.
Through this experience, I wanted to talk about the responsibility that comes with owning life. Vivarium was the best representation of possessing life for me. Therefore, after the re-production of the vivarium, a monitor with a video of beautiful images of the inside of the tank was attached to the back. After watching this video, which emphasizes the visual beauty of life, the viewers get to see the vivarium on the back. Mechanical devices to maintain this and the mirrors attached throughout the vivarium gives a sense of responsibility.
