This project questions the traditional qualities of yeobaek (餘白, emptiness or blank space) within a contemporary context. Yeobaek has long been understood as a space of emptiness, waiting, and latent possibility. Yet the project asks whether these qualities can still function within today’s environment, or whether the nature of yeobaek itself has changed.

Yeobaek does not exist independently but always operates in relation to its environment. For it to function, certain conditions are required: time to remain, a delay in interpretation, and values that cannot be translated into efficiency. Contemporary environments, however, demand immediate judgment, constant movement, automated decision-making, and efficiency-driven structures, thereby eliminating these conditions.

The device presented in this project detects empty spaces and moves accordingly. It does not stop, nor does it remain within yeobaek. Its decisions and movements are governed not by human choice but by an automated system. Yeobaek becomes not a destination but a route which is not a space to inhabit, but a transient state. The visual and auditory traces left by the moving device testify to the existence of yeobaek, while simultaneously revealing its inability to be occupied.

Ultimately, yeobaek retains its original qualities, but the environment in which those qualities can manifest has disappeared. This project does not idealize or attempt to restore yeobaek. Instead, it leaves behind a sensory experience of its failure to operate. Within an environment where yeobaek no longer functions, the work remains with the experience of that dissonance as it passes through.

이번 프로젝트는 전통적 성질의 여백을 현대적으로 반문한다. 여백은 오랫동안 비어있음, 기다림, 가능성을 품은 공간 등으로 인식되었지만, 그것이 오늘날의 환경 속에서도 적용될까, 혹은 현대의 여백은  그 성질 자체가 바뀌었을까.

여백은 혼자서 성립되지 못하고 항상 환경과 함께 작동되는 개념이다. 이것이 작동되려면 최소한 머무를 시간, 해석의 지연, 효율로 환산되지 않는 가치 등이 필요했다. 그러나 현대 환경은 즉각적 판단, 지속적 이동, 자동화된 선택, 효율 중심 구조를 요구하며 이러한 조건들을 제거한다.

이번 프로젝트에 등장하는 장치는 빈 공간을 인식하고 이동한다. 이 기계는 멈추지 않고, 여백에 머무르지 않는다. 판단과 이동은 인간의 선택이 아닌 자동화된 시스템에 의해 이루어진다. 여백은 목적지가 아니라 경로가 되며, 공간이 아닌 지나가는 상태로 남는다. 기계가 이동하면서 남기는 시각적, 청각적 흔적은 여백이 존재했음을 증명하는 동시에, 그것이 체류되지 못했음을 드러낸다.

결론적으로 여백은 여전히 같은 성질을 가지고 있지만, 그 성질이 발현될 수 있는 환경은 사라졌다. 이번 프로젝트는 여백을 이상화하지도, 회복하려 하지 않는다. 대신에 여백이 작동하지 못하는 상태에 대한 감각을 남긴다. 여백이 더 이상 작동하지 않는 환경 속에서, 그 어긋남을 하나의 경험으로 통과시키는 데 머문다.
