In today’s digital environment, images are endlessly generated and consumed. People habitually swipe through screens, rapidly passing through countless pieces of content. In this process, sensory friction gradually disappears, leaving behind only a repetitive flow. Short and immediate stimuli are continuously consumed, yet rather than intensifying perception, they slowly dull the senses and leave them in a suspended state. People often find themselves habitually scrolling through short-form videos out of boredom, while at the same time feeling reluctant to engage deeply with long-form content. I began to perceive this condition not simply as fatigue, but as a transformation in the rhythm of perception itself within an environment where friction has been removed.

In this work, I attempt to materialize this sensory condition through movement and temporality. The installation consists of a tank filled with glycerin, continuously rising bubbles, and pieces of charcoal that slowly sink within the liquid. Glycerin functions as an environment that minimizes resistance between movements. Within it, bubbles repeatedly rise and disappear, gliding toward the surface like the habitual motion of swiping. Yet these movements continue in circulation without leading to any accumulation or arrival.

Meanwhile, the charcoal slowly changes its state within this flow, neither fully floating nor completely settling. Slightly disturbed by the movement of bubbles, it remains suspended for a period of time before gradually becoming saturated and sinking. Through this scene, I view the endless generation and consumption of data and sensation within frictionless environments as a kind of ecological flow that continuously circulates, accumulates, and eventually reaches saturation.

오늘날의 디지털 환경에서 이미지는 끊임없이 생성되고 소비된다. 사람들은 습관적으로 화면을 스와이프하며 수많은 콘텐츠를 빠르게 통과한다. 그 과정은 감각적 충돌을 발생시키지 못한 채 반복적인 흐름으로 남는다. 짧고 즉각적인 자극은 지속적으로 소비되지만, 오히려 감각은 서서히 무뎌지고 유예된 상태에 머문다. 사람들은 습관적으로 짧은 영상들을 넘기며 무료함를 느끼지만, 그렇다고, 긴 호흡의 콘텐츠를 적극적으로 소비하는 것은 아니다. 나는 이러한 감각이 단순한 피로라기보다, 마찰이 제거된 환경 속에서 감각의 리듬 자체가 변형된 상태라고 느낀다.

이번 작업에서 나는 이러한 감각 상태를 물질의 움직임과 시간성을 통해 드러내고자 한다. 작품은 글리세린으로 채워진 수조와 그 안에서 반복적으로 생성되는 기포, 그리고 천천히 침잠하는 숯으로 구성된다. 글리세린은 움직임 사이의 저항을 최소화하는 환경으로 작동한다. 그 안에서 기포는 끊임없이 상승하고 사라지기를 반복하며, 마치 습관적인 스와이프처럼 표면을 향해 미끄러진다. 그러나 이러한 움직임은 어떤 축적이나 도달로 이어지지 않은 채 계속 순환한다.

한편 숯은 그 흐름 속에서 완전히 떠오르지도, 완전히 침전되지도 못한 채 서서히 상태를 변화시킨다. 기포의 움직임에 의해 미세하게 흔들리며 유예된 상태를 지속하던 숯은 시간이 흐를수록 천천히 포화되어 간다. 나는 이 장면을 통해, 마찰 없이 생성되고 소비되는 환경 속에서 감각과 데이터가 어떻게 끝없이 순환하고 축적되며, 결국에는 포화 상태에 이르는지를 하나의 생태적 흐름으로 바라보고자 한다.
